Book Arts Symposium Night 1 - October 26, 2021
This first University of Michigan Book Arts Symposium was conceived of and developed in an effort to build community, promote a sense of unity, and cultivate an atmosphere of collaboration and connection across the multiple manifestations of the book arts programs and educational initiatives on the University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor campus and in our surrounding community. The University of Michigan Library’s Book Arts Studio organized this Symposium to highlight the work being done by book arts educators, students, and community members that make up the unique fabric of book arts at the University of Michigan and related Washtenaw County communities. Themes and topics addressed during the Symposium included historic book structures, literary press publishing, type casting, artists’ book analysis and production, wood engraving, letterpress printing, innovations in letterpress printing, printmaking and hand papermaking education within Stamps School of Art and Design, Japanese woodblock printing, and the use of sustainable locally sourced fibers in hand papermaking practices.
Presenters included:
Lee Marchalonis, Lecturer I, Stamps School of Art & Design, University of Michigan
Fritz Swanson, Lecturer II, College of Literature, Science, and the Arts
